The team stepped back to South America this summer as I landed in Brazil a handful of new edit and publishing work landing out soon. Starting in Sao Paulo on a whirlwind two weeks of back to back travel, shoots, dinners, and every type of transportation of course. It wouldn’t be a CHWHAT shoot without that, no? A sartorial story set to the backdrops of the muted pastel deco hued architecture of Sao Paulo. As well of famed architect Marcos architecture Milan House for editorial. Next up to the wilds of the north to a location that I have now added to my top five, taking a number two seat as the most incredible other worldly locations that I have shot and filmed. Yes, the Lençóis Maranhenses. To a last stop back on the gold coast of the lush rain forests that but up to the bounty filled waters of the coast. Incredible as always. As a Michigan native my love for Detroit stands true to my love for my actual now home of New York City. PERSONAL | A PORTRAIT OF – Chef Ali Sahin
New personal work of a first installment for the continued project A Portrait Of , this time with my eyes set to home of New York City. I travel the globe for what I do, telling stories of people, of place, of process. Capturing editorials and campaigns of real people connected to brands in storytelling. Of books driven by visual story that engage you in the undiscovered. But there is one place I rarely get to capture these stories and that is home and also filled with some of the most powerful stories to tell. With a base to the authentic, that leans into heritage and a sense of timelessness. I felt it was important to begin the journey in New York with an icon maybe unknown to some, but to others of local in the East Village we call him King Ali. I call him a friend, as do many others who find this neighborhood home. We hear the voice of Chef Ali Sahin of C&B Cafe in the East Village, New York.
As all the other APO series, I lean into their words directed only by topic, a topic that I decide upon after we shoot the portrait. The portrait only an hour of time typically, a bit less or more pending. This process with all the subjects becomes very personal, and very real. Unlike the stories I shoot for assignment where we capture the images for the story idea already to be told… here I capture the portrait then directing the story based on the moment. Directed and curated by me I give the freedom to speak in their own words, Ali and all others share their view, their vision, their journey that connects them to this moment of now. A now that maybe you don’t see on the surface of their successes nor fame, a story that’s one step removed from the hype. I don’t work alone on these series, I also work with a set of talented copywriters from all over the globe who take the words of each portrait and craft them into the finale powerful statement delivered with the photo essay. A new campaign for Dandy Detroit lands, featuring Nelson T. Sanders Jr. , Gary Williams and Samuel Umachi. We begin a new series for the made to measure native in Detroit, leaning into three quiticential bits of food, fit and well etiquette. Working with Nelson as creative director and photographer we asses the history of Detroits certain sensibility it holds, one that is unspoken for the most part yet weights in gold. Being a Michigan native you know the depths, the importance and the determination of the heart that lies in those who come from this state and especially from this city. Detroit. Nelsons story is rich and so is this campaign – series. As we bring together real local casts of characters and put them in the most of quintessential of classic spaces that all pay homage to a city, but also to a pace that flows with the tempo of the brand.

Needless to say my favorite hotel desk of 2022 was here deep in the sleepy mountains in Piedmonte in a village that will remain unnamed for another year until our book releases… stay tuned!
