ESSAY | BEST MADE CO | ALVAH HOLMES | SPRING PLANTING

Description

BMCO. ALVAH HOLMES. SPRING PLANTING.

Spring in Eaton Rapids.

Photographer Christina Holmes takes us back to her father Alvah on the family farm in rural Michigan. Last we left him Alvah was in the orchard, busy with the Fall harvest. Now, on the seasonal antipode, he is in full swing planting new crops. The long winter meant a depleted woodpile for Alvah, and that needs replenishment (and a good sharp axe). Meals around the fire were a regular fixture of Christina’s childhood, so no trip back is ever complete without a campfire. Seemingly endless stalks of fresh asparagus picked from the garden, and Alvah’s mouth-watering tri-tip steak grilled over the open flame make us wonder if there is a better Spring homecoming. ~Peter Buchanan Smith

As always, special thanks to Alvah Holmes & Delores Holmes.
